PURPOSE:
To request City Council acceptance of monies donated to the Burbank Police Department and to appropriate the monies accordingly.
BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS:
At the City Council meeting on June 29, 2004, the Police Department acknowledged and thanked Micheal Cunningham for a very generous donation to the Youth Academy program. Shortly after this Council meeting Mr. Cunningham attended the Youth Academy graduation and spoke with many of the graduates. He was so impressed with the program, that he donated an additional $3,000 for future Youth Academy classes and the Explorer program.
The Youth Academy was created four years ago as part of our Community Outreach program. It is presented each summer for youth between the ages of 14 and 18 years. This program has been very successful in fostering positive police/youth relations within our community, while simultaneously mentoring youth interested in a career in law enforcement. Students learn academic topics such as criminal law, traffic enforcement, and drug laws, as well as life skills regarding a positive self image, how to prepare for employment interviews, and leadership skills. Donating a portion of this money to the Explorer program will allow academy graduates to gain additional practical experience on their way to becoming law enforcement officers.
FISCAL IMPACT:
To utilize monies generated by this donation, the Police Department is requesting that the budget be amended to appropriate $3,000 from Account 001-ND000-45000-1002 to Account 001-PD03A-70011-0000-15247.
RECOMMENDATION:
Mr. Cunningham was recently acknowledged at a Council meeting, therefore, staff is recommending that the City Council adopt a resolution amending the FY 2004-2005 budget by appropriating the above donation in the amount of $3,000.
