CITY  OF  BURBANK

POLICE DEPARTMENT

MEMORANDUM

DATE: July 27, 2004
TO: Mary Alvord, City Manager
FROM: Thomas Hoefel, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: RESOLUTION ACCEPTING DONATION TO THE BURBANK POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND AMENDING THE  FISCAL YEAR 04-05 BUDGET FOR THE PURPOSE OF APPROPRIATING THESE MONIES

PURPOSE:

To request City Council acceptance of monies donated to the Burbank Police Department and to appropriate the monies accordingly.

BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS:

In June, 2004, the Police Department received a donation from Jin and Rebekah Lee, Ultimate Tae Kwon Do Academy, in the amount of $600.  The department would like to appropriate this money for the Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, minimizing the impact on our young people of gangs, alcohol and drugs.  Funding will provide necessary supplies for this on-going investment in our youth.

D.A.R.E. classes are presented as a joint effort of the Burbank Police Department and the Burbank Unified School District, utilizing specially trained Burbank Police Department School Resource Officers as the course facilitators.  This program has been very successful in fostering positive police/youth relations within our community in addition to providing its core curriculum of simple, specific techniques for resisting violence, gangs, alcohol and narcotics.

FISCAL IMPACT:

To utilize monies generated by this donation, the Police Department is requesting that the budget be amended to appropriate $600 from Account 001-ND000-45000-1002 to Account 001-PD03A-70011-0000-15247.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff is recommending that the City Council express its appreciation to Jin and Rebekah Lee and adopt a resolution amending the FY 2004-2005 budget by appropriating the above donation in the amount of $600.
