PURPOSE:
To request City Council acceptance of monies donated to the Burbank Police Department and to appropriate the monies accordingly.
BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS:
In May 2004, the Police Department received a donation from Michael Cunningham in the amount of $3,000. The department would like to appropriate this money for the 2004 Summer Youth Academy program. Funding will provide each participant with a notebook, uniform shirt, cap, certificate of completion, bottled water, and any other necessary supplies.
The Youth Academy was created four years ago as part of our Community Outreach Program. It is presented each summer for youth between the ages of 14 and 18 years. This program has been very successful in fostering positive police/youth relations within our community, while simultaneously mentoring youth interested in a career in law enforcement. Students learn academic topics such as criminal law, traffic enforcement, and drug laws, as well as life skills regarding a positive self image, how to prepare for employment interviews, and leadership skills.
FISCAL IMPACT:
To utilize monies generated by this donation, the Police Department is requesting that the budget be amended to appropriate $3,000 from Account 001-ND000-45000-1002 to Account 001-PD03B-62300.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff is recommending that the City Council express its appreciation to Michael Cunningham and adopt a resolution amending the FY 2004-2005 budget by appropriating the above donation in the amount of $3,000.
